Teacher’s Day FOOH at Zeitz MOCAA – CGI Banner Experience

A viral 23-second FOOH CGI campaign for Teacher’s Day, turning the iconic Zeitz MOCAA architecture into a massive realistic banner installation with CGI paragliders and a thank-you message for teachers.

Project Overview

A Teacher’s Day greeting became a large-scale architectural FOOH moment.

Western Cape Education Department needed a non-standard way to express gratitude to teachers – something more memorable than a traditional festive video.

The goal was to create viral FOOH content that would integrate the Teacher’s Day message into a recognizable Cape Town landmark and attract attention through surprise, scale and realism.

Lumenstory created a CGI banner experience where Zeitz MOCAA’s architecture becomes part of the story: a massive banner unfolds from the roof, follows the building geometry and reveals an emotional message for teachers.

The Challenge

The banner had to feel physically real on one of Cape Town’s most recognizable buildings.

The main challenge was making a huge CGI cloth banner interact naturally with the complex tubular architecture of Zeitz MOCAA.

The cloth needed believable weight, inertia and surface contact, while also staying readable in a fast vertical mobile-first social video.

The CGI banner, paragliders and live-action environment had to match camera tracking, perspective, lighting, scale and architectural depth so the installation felt real rather than composited.

Creative Direction

The museum facade became a living canvas for gratitude.

The creative idea was to make the Teacher’s Day message feel physically present in the city. Instead of adding a text overlay, the campaign turns the message into a large architectural banner that appears to exist on Zeitz MOCAA itself.

The key wow moment was the giant banner unfolding from the roof, sliding down the curved forms of Zeitz MOCAA, while CGI paragliders fly nearby and make the scale feel even larger.

What We Created

A viral FOOH banner experience where architecture, cloth simulation and social storytelling worked together.

  • Large-scale CGI cloth banner unfolding from Zeitz MOCAA roof
  • Physically believable cloth simulation adapted to complex architecture
  • CGI paragliders and live-action environment integration
  • Final social-first content for TikTok, Instagram Reels, Facebook and digital platforms
Production scope
  • Storyboard
  • Animatic
  • CGI / 3D production
  • Houdini cloth simulation
  • Camera tracking, rotoscoping and compositing
  • Final mobile-first social media delivery
Process

A FOOH pipeline built around architectural tracking, cloth realism and fast social-media impact.

01

Storyboard

The banner reveal, architecture interaction and Teacher’s Day message were structured first.

02

Animatic

Banner movement, reveal speed, paragliders and camera composition were tested before heavy simulation.

03

CGI Production

The banner, paragliders and environment integration elements were created and prepared for compositing.

04

Simulation & Compositing

Cloth simulation, camera tracking, rotoscoping, color matching and VFX cleanup were refined.

05

Final Delivery

The final FOOH video was prepared for TikTok, Instagram Reels, Facebook and other digital platforms.

Technical Execution

The technical core was making a massive CGI cloth object behave naturally on complex real architecture.

The hardest part was creating realistic behavior for a huge banner moving across Zeitz MOCAA’s rounded architectural forms.

The simulation had to preserve the material’s weight, tension, inertia and contact with the building, while staying visually readable in a short mobile-first video.

Camera tracking and perspective reconstruction were essential because the CGI banner had to follow the real architecture without sliding, floating or breaking scale.

The production used Cinema 4D, Houdini cloth simulation, Redshift, After Effects, PFTrack / camera tracking, compositing, rotoscoping, color matching and VFX cleanup.

Production Notes

Five revision rounds refined banner speed, scale, paragliders and animation details before final render.

  • Creative Director
  • 3D Artists
  • Houdini FX Artist
  • Motion Designer
  • Sound Designer
  • Project Manager

The main revisions focused on the banner unfolding speed, structure scale, paraglider flight dynamics and animation details. Risks were controlled through animatic and motion previs approval before final cloth simulations.

Client Feedback
“Thank you for this project – the effect looked so realistic, as if the installation truly existed on Zeitz MOCAA. We especially liked how the architecture became part of the story.”
Outcome

A Teacher’s Day message became a viral architectural FOOH experience.

The video reached 5.3 million views on TikTok and received 21.1 thousand likes, creating strong organic reach and audience engagement.

The project helped transform Teacher’s Day communication from a traditional greeting into a large-scale digital experience that people wanted to discuss, rewatch and share.

A large part of the audience perceived the video as a real installation, confirming the quality of the CGI integration and the strength of the FOOH illusion.

The result proved that real architecture, CGI cloth simulation and emotional storytelling can create social-first content with strong organic distribution potential.
